5 Essential Leather Care Tips Every Rider Should Know

5 Essential Leather Care Tips Every Rider Should Know

Your leather tack is an investment in quality. With the right care, it will serve you for years — even decades. Here are our five essential tips.

1. Clean After Every Use

Wipe down your tack with a slightly damp cloth after each ride. This removes sweat, dust, and dirt before they can dry and damage the leather. Pay special attention to areas that contact the horse's skin.

2. Condition Monthly

Apply a quality leather conditioner once a month, or more frequently if the leather is exposed to rain or heavy use. Work the conditioner into the leather with a soft cloth, using circular motions.

3. Avoid Direct Heat

Never dry your leather tack near a radiator, in direct sunlight, or with a hairdryer. Heat causes leather to dry out, crack, and become brittle. Always let wet leather dry naturally at room temperature.

4. Store Properly

Hang bridles on wide, rounded hooks (never nails) to maintain their shape. Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. Consider using breathable cotton covers for long-term storage.

5. Deep Clean Quarterly

Use saddle soap for a thorough clean every three months. Apply with a damp sponge, work into a lather, and wipe away. Follow with conditioner once the leather is completely dry.

Products We Recommend

A quality leather care kit should include: a glycerin saddle soap, leather conditioner or balm, soft cotton cloths, and a sponge. Avoid products containing petroleum or silicone.
